As a young girl, I always dreamed of having a pet of my own. It was a goal that I was unsure that I would ever reach. But, I felt that connection any time I went to a kids birthday party or a neighbourhood barbecue, where I would more than likely be off in a corner petting the family dog rather than playing with the other kids. In 2009, my parents bought a shih-tzu puppy that stole our hearts. I was lucky enough to have the family companion I always dreamed of. Bella was not like other dogs, in the sense that she was not touchy-feely, and everything cuddling or playing related was on her terms. Despite her sassiness sometimes, she has always brought the happiest parts of myself to the surface. We grew into a rhythm that allowed her to be the independent woman she was, while she tolerated my cuddles along the way. Having that kind of experience taught me so much about what it is to own and love an animal. Every pet is different and their eccentricities should always be celebrated. They give us so much joy in such a short time, they should be pampered and cared for just as they are. At Upper Canada, I feel honoured to work with beautiful families and pets on a daily basis. I am also incredibly lucky to work with a team that provides the service and care that I would want for my own fur baby. Who thankfully enough, is still here with me. She fills my heart with more love and happiness than ever, despite all of her now senior lady sass. I cannot wait to continue my journey at UCAH, and to surround myself with others who have the same love and compassion for animals that I do.
